Black Box "Wallpaper" Understore Ghost

The Ghost is hand painted in inks in the chinoiserie style ( sometimes called Mock India ); In the eighteenth century Chinoiserie was part of a desire for novelty and ‘otherness’ in European design, which had long followed the rules of classicism. A mixture of East and West with tranquil imagery and romantic details, the designs had a beautiful, ornate look and were both expensive and fashionable. This design of block printed wallpaper featuring peacocks and peonies could be found in a handful of Yorkshires most desirable residences. Wallpaper of this style adorns the bedchamber walls at Wood End and the Ghost was given as token of goodwill by Mr Carpenter to Lady Talbot.

It is believed that a. small number of these Ghosts were made by the skilled house painter and decorator Samuel Carpenter who was much in demand across the country for his excellence in the decoration of the finest townhouses and the most opulent country houses. Its is believed that he gave these Ghosts to the Lady of the house either as a decorative sample, an offering of goodwill or as some have suggested a romantic gesture.
