The Dispensary

The Dispensary is an addition to our shop on the Shambles; it is an elegant trading booth sited in St Anthony’s Garden which is just a 5 minute walk from our shop on the Shambles.

Flanked to the north by a 15th century church, to the south by a medieval guild hall and backing onto the city walls The Ghost Dispensary sits in the tranquil surroundings of the privately owned garden. Mature trees provide dappled shade to the rear, beneath is a verdant tapestry of rich and varied planting including gentians, lilies, ferns, primroses and rosemary.

The Dispensary has been created with an ambition to reduce waiting times during our most busy periods and offers a brisker opportunity to purchase York Ghosts away from the hustle & bustle of the Shambles. 

Please do be aware that we are not able to open The Dispensary every day, and we will not keep regular hours so please be guided by The Merchants on the Shambles as to the opening status of the Dispensary each day. Opening days and times are entirely at our discretion and cannot be guaranteed and may be subject to change at short notice.

The Dispensary will stock a reduced selection of our Original and Little York Ghosts as well as Phantoms and occasionally a small selection of polished Ghosts. Rare & unusual Ghosts will not be available unless we announce otherwise in advance.

We take card payment only at The Dispensary and no cash is kept on the premises. We are unable to accept “swipe” cards such as Union Pay. We kindly ask that you respect the other users of the garden if you visit.

PLEASE NOTE: Please do not enter the Arras Restaurant and we ask that you respect their clients, the use of the Arras toilets is for their patrons only. Arras is a highly regarded fine dining restaurant, they are not open for teas and coffees. The entrance to the gardens is immediately before Arras and the Dispensary can be found to the right of the gardens.

DIRECTIONS: A small paper map can be obtained from the Merchants at the shop on the Shambles ( when it is open ) or use the digital map below.

Proceed along the Shambles towards Stonebow. Turn left just before the end of the Shambles and pass through the narrow snickleway ( alley ). Continue across Whip-ma-whop-ma-Gate and walk along the rather attractive St Saviourgate. At the end of St Saviourgate bear to the right. You will now see the timber framed Black Swan Pub ahead of you. Stay to the left and after 20 metres turn into the gardens through the gate just before the bus stop. The Dispensary can be found in the long low building to the right of the gardens. A Merchant on duty will be able to assist.
