Popinjay
In the 15th century, “popinjay” was a word often used for a parrot. Parrots were rare and exotic, and it was quite a compliment to be called a "popinjay" after such a beautiful bird. But by the 1700s, parrots had become more commonplace, and their gaudy plumage and vulgar mimicry helped "popinjay" become a term used to affront a person given to vain, pretentious displays and empty chatter.
