Urchin

The term “urchin” was often used in Victorian times to refer to orphans, desperately poor or mischievous children. It is a less well-known fact that the first urchins were hedgehogs… Strangely enough, '“urchin” comes from the 13th century French word yrichon, (which the English pronounced ur-chin) - the word is still used as such in parts of Northern England today for hedgehogs.

Sometime around the mid-15th century, the English stopped calling these small mammals covered in bristles "urchins" and decided that they looked like piglets that typically lived in shrubs.

Urchin then came into use to describe the grubby children who lives in the crowded inner city slums. Perhaps they got the name because at the time, they were small, wild and many in number - or maybe because of their prickly characters and nocturnal habits.

The Urchin Ghost is initially pure white, but is made dirty with untidy grey or black front streaks and veils. Certainly not one of our prettiest Ghosts and one to keep a watchful eye upon.
