Josiah

Have you ever picked a fragment of broken pottery from a clod of earth, wiped clean it’s cracked glaze and revealed a hint of blue pattern? A lost jigsaw piece of a once-upon-a-time teapot or an everyday dining plate? Do you wonder who once bought it, used it, touched its surface and imagine the life it lived? Each shard holds the Ghosts of long gone lives.

There’s a good chance that the piece of domestic history that you hold hailed from Stoke on Trent. Stoke-on-Trent has been shaped by the pottery industry for over 300 years and is affectionately known the world over as 'The Potteries'. From small-scale beginnings in the mid seventeenth century, the abundance of coal and clay meant that the pottery industry grew, and became rooted in the area. Coincidentally, the founders of two of the most renowned pottery companies - Spode and Wedgwood - which were established in Stoke 250 years ago both shared the same Christian name; Josiah.
