Muttering Judge
A black bodied Ghost with a cracked white gown. Within the batch the ratio of black to white varies from Ghost to Ghost, this is a consequence of the capricious nature of the technique that is used in their making. Each Ghost will bear quite different markings as illustrated in the pictures.
The Muttering Judge is based upon tales told of a high court judge who regularly visited the city to attend the quarterly sessions at the Assize Courts at York Castle in the early 19th century. These were criminal courts held for the most serious crimes in the country, after sessions were over for the day this particular character was known to frequent certain inns and taverns in the vicinity of his lodgings, always without company and well known for his incoherent dialogue which with bowed head he directed in the direction of his tankard of ale .
