Ogleforth
Chapter House Street, leading into Ogleforth, is a quiet and atmospheric thoroughfare tucked behind the North East transept of the Minster, accessible through Minster Yard.
In 1736 it was remarked that Ogleforth was ‘small, but there are now few in the city better built.’ At this time, York was consolidating its position as a major place for social rendezvous, and the location of the street close to the Treasurer’s House and the Minster, within walking distance of the new Assembly Rooms, would have made this a highly desirable place for residence. Historical sources attest to inhabitants in the area of considerable social status, however, there would also have been individuals in the area of lesser status; house painters, fellmongers and tradesmen are listed in documentary sources of the time for Ogleforth.
On cold, foggy nights, passing beyond the Treasurers House and Grays Court, the street lights are dim are the vaporous clouds of mist can conjure up ethereal forms at the west end of Ogleforth.
Ogleforth is a ghost of subtle watery Celadon green, but occasionally appears with an effulgent aura.
