1901 Penny Dreadful

Congratulations for accessing the Understore and gaining the opportunity to purchase one of just two Understore Penny Dreadful Ghosts. The base of these two Ghosts has been subtly marked to distinguish them from the general release.

The Penny Dreadful takes its name from the cheap popular serial pieces of literature of the nineteenth century which were published in weekly parts, each costing one penny. The subject matter of these stories was typically sensational, focusing on the exploits of criminals, or supernatural entities.

The body is a polished ebony-black which is lightly veiled with a dim grey. Some veils are more prominent than others as is the nature of a handmade veiled Ghost. In the base of each Ghost lies a 1901 brass penny, the pennies are all 120 years old and hold marks and history of their own. The coins were minted in the year of Queen Victorias death they have passed through the hands of many, the imagined stories are preserved in these Ghosts for good. The 1901 Penny Dreadful is released on the 120th anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria.

Our first batch of forty 1900 Penny Dreadfuls were released online and in the shop last October. Due to the third lockdown this batch of 1901 Penny Dreadfuls is sold on our website shop(s) only. A batch of 1890’s Penny Dreadfuls are being made for sale exclusively through the shop over two release days at on dates to be announced once it is deemed safe for us to trade again from the Shambles.
