The solid brass is hand cast in a family run forge in South Yorkshire. They are produced using a traditional sand casting method in small numbers before hand finishing and polishing, this is a small batch artisan casting process. The surface bears small marks and blemishes of the process. Brass will discolour ( tarnish ) with age and handling, they can be re-polished with Brasso and a soft cloth.

The Bronze Age was followed by the Iron Age, there was no 'Brass Age' because, for many years, it was not easy to make brass. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and has historical and enduring importance because of its hardness and workability. The ancient Romans used brass primarily in vessels, dress armour, brooches or clasps. From the 13th to the 17th century in Europe, monumental brasses were used to commemorate the dead. Engraved brass plates, were set into the surface of the tomb and often were embellished with inscriptions, heraldic devices, and other designs appropriate to the individual’s life and circumstance. It found other uses in the manufacture of utilitarian household wares and chandeliers, candlesticks, sundials, and clocks. brass also became the standard alloy from which were made all accurate instruments such as clocks, watches and navigational aids. The invention by Harrison of the chronometer in 1761 depended on the use of brass for the manufacture of an accurate timekeeper, this took much of the guesswork out of marine navigation and saved many lives. There are many examples of clocks from the 17th and 18th centuries still in good working order.
