Charcoal Stonemason Terrazzo
Terrazzo ghosts are amongst the rarest of all ghosts made by The York Ghost Merchants - we only make a handful or two each month, and their popularity ensures they don’t stay on the shelves for long. Our last terrazzo Ghosts online were sold on New Year’s Day.
This is a batch of charcoal grey terrazzo ghosts, each of which go through four different processes to achieve this most intriguing surface. We collect small chippings and waste pieces from many hundreds of our ghosts which are ground down further and added to our mix. When finished, the pieces reveal themselves as jewel-like flecks of colour - fragments of many ghosts embodied in a new spirit.
Each terrazzo ghost is different and the surface is made up with small flecks of many colours as well as some small bubbles, crevices and blemishes which are part of the character of these particular ghosts.
The history of terrazzo dates back over five hundred years. Terrazzo (Italian for “Terrace”) floors were invented in Venice during the 15th century. Workers were left with oddly shaped pieces of marble after jobs, and to avoid wastage they would put the small marble rocks in clay and grind them flat to make composite walking surfaces. The terrazzo would only show its true colour when wet until workers discovered the milk of their goats worked as a finish to allow the terrazzo to show its real colour when dyed and polished. No goats milk is used in the making of these ghosts.
