Little Tavern Ghost
In his 17th century diary, Samuel Pepys described the tavern as “the heart of England”.
The inhabitants of the British Isles have been drinking ale since the Bronze age, but it was with the arrival of the Roman Empire on its shores in the 1st century, and the construction of the road networks that the first inns, called tabernae (tavern), in which travellers could obtain refreshment, began to appear.
The Ghost Merchants is situated on an ancient street called The Shambles. Over the past 400 years there have been many taverns, old inns and public houses operating as places of socialisation, drink, sustenance, gambling, commerce and debauchery on the Shambles and down the snickleways leading off it. The Globe, The Old Turk’s Head, The Greyhound, The Shoulder of Mutton and The Neptune are now long gone, and so have the characters who ran them and the many who frequented them. Only The Shambles Tavern remains, directly opposite the ghost merchants shop, if you ever visit look out for one of our red-eyed Tavern Ghosts, you may spot it amongst the bottles and tankards on the shelves. Good health.
